PEORIA —

A 19-year-old man was arrested Sunday morning and booked on a charge of attempted murder in a double shooting that occurred late last month.

Darius L. Stewart of 304 E. Republic Ave. is accused of shooting Lamar Howard, 26, and Jay C. Brown, 25, both of Peoria, during an argument just before 11:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the 1300 block of John H. Gwynn Jr. Avenue.

Stewart was arrested about 2:40 a.m. Sunday in the 700 block of East Hightower Street and booked on a charge of unlawful use of a weapon. He was later booked on the attempted murder charge, as well as aggravated battery with a weapon.

He was being held Sunday at the Peoria County Jail.

The two victims were apparently arguing with three men outside a house when Stewart allegedly pulled out a handgun and began shooting at the two men, who ran into the home. Howard was found lying on the kitchen floor suffering from three gunshot wounds to the lower body and Brown made it into a bedroom, where he was found lying between the bed and a dresser suffering from five gunshot wounds, according to reports. They were both treated for the nonlife-threatening injuries at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.

PEORIA —

Police were questioning several individuals in connection with a shooting in which a man was shot in the back Wednesday evening.

The man, who police said was in his early 20s, was conscious and was able to tell police who had shot him about 6 p.m. at an apartment in the 500 block of West Hillyer Place. Police said the gunman was likely standing about 15 feet from the front door of the apartment and fired a shotgun, hitting not only the victim, but parts of the apartment walls and a light fixture outside the entrance. The victim was apparently in the doorway inside the apartment at the time of the shooting.

His identity and condition were unavailable Wednesday night, though police confirmed he was alive.

Neighbors said they heard two gunshots and then tires screeching. Police received information about the car in which the alleged gunman had fled, and stopped a vehicle several blocks away at MacArthur Highway and Moss Avenue. Police said they had two people in custody but had made no arrests as of 10 p.m.

Two more men were charged Friday in connection with a weekend home invasion that left one man with a gunshot wound to the head.

Terrance T. Bassett, 19, of 1100 S. Matthew St. and Anthony D. Taliaferro, 18, of 107 Merriman Court face charges of home invasion and aggravated battery with a firearm. Because a person was shot with a handgun, 15 years were added onto the base range of six to 30 years.

On Thursday, Antonio L. Anderson, 32, of 1822 N. Missouri Ave., the alleged shooter, was charged with the same counts. Bobby L. Short, 30, homeless, was charged with armed robbery and residential burglary. He faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors allege Bassett, Anderson and Taliaferro went to the house in the 3200 block of West Starr Street looking for drugs and money. Short had allegedly set up the robbery and is being held legally accountable for the trio’s actions even though he was not apparently involved in the actual crime.

Assistant State’s Attorney Steve Pattelli said Bassett and Taliaferro both confessed to being present during the break-in. Both men were held Friday on $500,000 bond.

Short was previously held on $100,000 bond, while Anderson’s bond was set at $1 million.
