PEORIA —

A car thief was apparently unsuccessful with stealing four cars Saturday evening but left them with ignitions broken.

Four South Peoria residents called police to report attempted vehicle thefts, all occurring between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday. The steering columns were pried off on all four cars, so the ignition no longer functioned.

Two residents said the cars were parked between the 700 and 1000 blocks of Blaine Street and another was a couple of blocks away in the 1600 block of Antoinette Street. The fourth reported his car was parked in the 900 block of Greenlawn, which was within the same three-block radius.

In each case, the thief either opened an unlocked door or broke out a window to get inside the car. Damages were estimated at about $500 for each vehicle.

Police have not formally connected the cases, and no arrests had been made as of Monday.

PEORIA —

A 50-year-old man was beaten and robbed Saturday evening while walking through the shuttered Harrison Homes.

The victim told police he was walking near the housing complex about 6:30 p.m., when he was approached by five men. One asked him for money, and when he replied he had none they began kicking and punching him, according to a Peoria police report.

The attackers stole his wallet, containing an undisclosed amount of money, his cell phone and his keys. One of the robbers attempted to snatch the man’s boot, but was unsuccessful.

The attack left the man, however, with a broken ankle, and he had to drag himself to a nearby bar to call for help, according to the report. The victim was treated at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center for the broken ankle and released.

He could not give a description of the young men, except that they wore “bling,” the report stated.

No arrests had been made as of Sunday night.

PEORIA —

A 20-year veteran of the Peoria Police Department has been placed on administrative leave.

An investigation into allegations Clayton Glasper, 44, a patrol officer, inappropriately fondled a woman while on duty led to the decision, effective Nov. 16.

Not much else is known about the incident, including when he will return to duty.

Police and city officials declined to comment Wednesday, saying it was a personnel matter, therefore confidential.

Sources within the Police Department said the allegations may merit criminal charges, which could come in the form of an indictment. The next Peoria County grand jury meets Tuesday.

It’s common for officers to be placed on administrative leave while an investigation, either internal or criminal, is being conducted. The police chief determines whether the leave is paid or unpaid. In Glasper’s case, it is paid.

PEORIA —

A 19-year-old man was arrested Sunday morning and booked on a charge of attempted murder in a double shooting that occurred late last month.

Darius L. Stewart of 304 E. Republic Ave. is accused of shooting Lamar Howard, 26, and Jay C. Brown, 25, both of Peoria, during an argument just before 11:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the 1300 block of John H. Gwynn Jr. Avenue.

Stewart was arrested about 2:40 a.m. Sunday in the 700 block of East Hightower Street and booked on a charge of unlawful use of a weapon. He was later booked on the attempted murder charge, as well as aggravated battery with a weapon.

He was being held Sunday at the Peoria County Jail.

The two victims were apparently arguing with three men outside a house when Stewart allegedly pulled out a handgun and began shooting at the two men, who ran into the home. Howard was found lying on the kitchen floor suffering from three gunshot wounds to the lower body and Brown made it into a bedroom, where he was found lying between the bed and a dresser suffering from five gunshot wounds, according to reports. They were both treated for the nonlife-threatening injuries at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.
