PEORIA —

The Butternut Bread Thrift Store was robbed at gunpoint Monday evening.

Police said a black man about 18 years old robbed the store at the intersection of West Howett and South Shelley streets with a black handgun. No one was injured.

After taking an undisclosed amount of money, the man fled the store on foot and ran toward South Western Avenue.

Police said he was wearing a red and green hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans, was about 130 pounds and about 5 feet 5 inches tall.

Police Tasered and arrested one person Saturday night during a 30-person fight outside the CityLink Transit Center.

Several small fights, not involving weapons, erupted at about 7:30 p.m. while passengers waited for buses to arrive at the Transit Center, 407 SW Adams St., police at the scene said. The smaller fights eventually became one large brawl, and police intervened.

They Tasered and arrested Cordelius Brown, 17, who police said has no home address. He was transported to the Peoria County Jail and booked on charges of battery and resisting police.

No one was injured seriously in the fight, police said, and most of those involved fled northbound on foot.

She-Nigger Shoots Man Six Times, Free on Bond

A South Peoria woman pleaded guilty Monday to shooting at a man in January.

Cheryl Langford, 53, of 2015 W. Antoinette St. now faces either probation or up to 15 years in prison when sentenced on March 6. She remains free on bond pending that hearing.

As part of a deal with prosecutors, charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm were dropped in return for Langford’s plea to aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Police were called to her home shortly before 5 a.m. on Jan. 4. They found Lewis R. Donley, 47, who also lives at the Antoinette Street home, shot and suffering from what police described as “life-threatening injuries.”

Assistant State’s Attorney Jodi Hoos said Langford and Donley had been married at some point and were arguing that day. The altercation turned violent, and Langford shot him six times with a .22-caliber revolver.

The prosecutor said cuts on Langford’s body, which she initially told police were caused by Donley, were actually self-inflicted.

A South Peoria man was arrested after a gunfight at a gas station late Christmas Day.

Tuison D. Chalk, 24, of 1515 W. Widenham St. was arrested on weapons charges following the fight, which resulted in no injuries, at Circle K gas station, 2416 N. University St.

Several shots were fired inside the gas station about 11:50 p.m. before the large group of men fled in several different directions, according to police reports.

Witnesses told police one man fled on foot northbound on University, several fled southbound in a car and several others fled southbound on foot.

Minutes later, police were dispatched to the 1000 block of East Thrush Avenue, three blocks south of the gas station, on reports of several more shots fired. Chalk was arrested there and booked on charges of unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated discharge of a firearm and not having a valid firearm owner’s identification card.

When the Public Employees for Community Concerns hosted the first annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Luncheon 17 years ago, it featured local speakers and served about 200 attendees. Alma Brown, the luncheon’s chair, reported, “When we first started coordinating the luncheon, we wanted to have something on that date to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and have something that could bring the community together in fellowship, and maybe learn a little more about his life.” Attesting to the tremendous growth of this event, recent luncheons have hosted at least 2,000 people and featured nationally known speakers, and this year is no different.

On Monday, January 19th, the 17th annual luncheon at the Peoria Civic Center will feature keynote speaker Bill Cosby, King family friend. “When looking for speakers,” Brown said, “we try to find someone who had a connection with the family or someone who can share their insights of Dr. King and maybe how Dr. King touched their life, and I think Bill Cosby can speak to each one of those issues very well.”

Immediately following the luncheon, Cosby will also hold a parents’ forum for 150 local moms and dads. He will speak about his most recent book, Come on People: On the Path from Victims to Victors, and answer parents’ questions about his insights into parenthood and other related topics.

The luncheon will again be followed by the 23rd annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom March, put on by the King Holiday Committee of Peoria. A CityLink-sponsored Freedom Trolley will provide transportation from the Civic Center to Bradley University’s Garrett Center, where the march will begin at 2pm. After walking through the streets of Peoria, the march will end at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where a commemorative service and awards ceremony will take place.

A Pekin man walking in a South Peoria neighborhood Thursday evening was robbed of his coat and $5 in cash at gunpoint.

The 35-year-old victim was walking in the 2900 block of West Nevada Street at about 5:40 p.m. when two men reportedly approached him and asked him if he wanted to buy drugs.

He refused the drugs, and the men demanded he give them his coat, according to police reports. When he told them no, one reportedly pulled a gun and again demanded the victim’s coat and money.

He gave the men $5 in cash and his coat before they each punched him seven or eight times and discussed which one was going to kill him, he told police. The man eventually broke free and ran. He was later treated for minor injuries at Pekin Hospital.

The tire of a Peoria police car was shot early Saturday in South Peoria.

A patrol officer was driving westbound on West Montana Street near its intersection with South Idaho Street about 12:40 a.m. when he heard several gunshots coming from an unknown direction and unknown source, according to police reports.

One tire on the squad car was flat from bullets penetrating it. The officer was not injured. The shooter was never found.

A former Richwoods High School basketball star admitted this week that she violated her probation, a move that could put her in prison for several years.

Biannca Ward, 20, admitted Wednesday that she tested positive for marijuana six times from January to September and did not participate in a mandated drug treatment program. She remains in custody at the Peoria County Jail and faces four years and possibly up to 15 years in prison when sentenced Feb. 19.

Ward could be resentenced to probation as well.

In June 2006, Ward pleaded guilty to two counts of residential burglary and one count of attempted residential burglary. She also pleaded to aggravated robbery for holding up a 64-year-old woman outside Michael’s Arts and Crafts, 5212 N. Big Hollow Road.

She was sentenced to six years in prison for residential burglary but was allowed to participate in the state’s “boot camp” program for six months. Ward completed the program and didn’t have to finish the rest of her sentence. Once she was released, she was put on probation for the aggravated robbery case and had that probation transferred to Will County, where the failed drug tests occurred.

In 2005, Ward, then a sophomore, helped the Richwoods girls basketball team win a state-record 38 games on the way to an undefeated season and Class AA state championship, and was the Journal Star’s Class AA player of the year.

The early Tuesday killing of a longtime cab driver marks the sixth homicide of the year.

Steven E. Shawver, 59, of 3214 NE Madison Ave. was found shot about 5:50 a.m. in the 1200 block of West MacQueen Avenue. Two people on their way to work stumbled across his body.

“They came up to the car – the cab was parked in the middle of the street with its lights on,” said Peoria police spokesman Doug Burgess. “Then they noticed him laying unresponsive on the street next to the opened driver’s side door.”

Shawver, a driver for Peoria Yellow Checker Cab Corp., was pronounced dead about 6:35 a.m. at the scene, Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll said. He died of multiple gunshot wounds to the back, according to results from an autopsy. Ingersoll would not elaborate how many times Shawver was shot, because of the ongoing investigation.
