PEORIA —

Police were questioning several individuals in connection with a shooting in which a man was shot in the back Wednesday evening.

The man, who police said was in his early 20s, was conscious and was able to tell police who had shot him about 6 p.m. at an apartment in the 500 block of West Hillyer Place. Police said the gunman was likely standing about 15 feet from the front door of the apartment and fired a shotgun, hitting not only the victim, but parts of the apartment walls and a light fixture outside the entrance. The victim was apparently in the doorway inside the apartment at the time of the shooting.

His identity and condition were unavailable Wednesday night, though police confirmed he was alive.

Neighbors said they heard two gunshots and then tires screeching. Police received information about the car in which the alleged gunman had fled, and stopped a vehicle several blocks away at MacArthur Highway and Moss Avenue. Police said they had two people in custody but had made no arrests as of 10 p.m.

Accounts show black males’ struggles, Monkey Madness Continues In Peoria

PEORIA —

At a community meeting Thursday night to find strategies that would help improve the lives of African-American men, some raw stories of the plight of black males emerged.

Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who passed legislation last year creating the task force to address issues affecting the African-American community, might well have been stunned by some of these stories.

What would he have told the woman who asked for help for her son who was sent to jail at age 16 and is expected to be released soon at the age of 47.

“What am I going to do?” she asked. “What is he going to do? Who can I turn to for help?”

One man who described himself as an ex-convict got a college education while in prison but cannot find employment, despite his desire to change his life.

“What do you feel is needed in your community, in line with the bill,” asked Dana Travis of the Department of Corrections.

Along with Curtis Thompson of the Illinois Deprtment of Transportation and Lee Carter of the local Department of Health and Human Services, Travis led the meeting which sought to get the views of the community and any solutions they may offer. It was hosted by the Rev. Tony Pierce of Heavens View Christian Fellowship.

Senate Bill 776 established the first statewide task force on the Condition of African-American Men in Illinois. At a series of forums, the community is encouraged to speak about incarceration and parole rates, high school and post secondary education, economic earnings and health.

Several of the audience of about 40 people in Peoria on Thursday night said it was necessary to create jobs for youth.

“We’re not talking about college degree jobs,” said Agbara Bryson, who teaches at Illinois Central College. “We need jobs for individuals who are ex-offenders, whether it be in construction or something else; some training with GED that leads to employment.”

Generally, African-American youth need mentoring, because of the lack of male role models in their family, some said.

Apathy is another major setback for the African-American community, said Herschel Hannah, associate superintendent of District 150.

The word “fatherhood” also is a big issue and the community needs to find a way to help the black men find their way toward discharging the duties of that role, he said.

“Those of us who have had some success, we run as far away as we can from the ‘hood instead of going back and helping out,” Hannah said.

Racial profiling still is prevalent said one pastor who said he was stopped three times this year by police.

The task force is a step toward assisting men in the African-American community get better access to the state services available. But as some pointed out, although there are many resources in existence, not enough people are aware of them or know how to access them.

The task force has to report its findings to the governor and the General Assembly by Dec. 1

Two more men were charged Friday in connection with a weekend home invasion that left one man with a gunshot wound to the head.

Terrance T. Bassett, 19, of 1100 S. Matthew St. and Anthony D. Taliaferro, 18, of 107 Merriman Court face charges of home invasion and aggravated battery with a firearm. Because a person was shot with a handgun, 15 years were added onto the base range of six to 30 years.

On Thursday, Antonio L. Anderson, 32, of 1822 N. Missouri Ave., the alleged shooter, was charged with the same counts. Bobby L. Short, 30, homeless, was charged with armed robbery and residential burglary. He faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors allege Bassett, Anderson and Taliaferro went to the house in the 3200 block of West Starr Street looking for drugs and money. Short had allegedly set up the robbery and is being held legally accountable for the trio’s actions even though he was not apparently involved in the actual crime.

Assistant State’s Attorney Steve Pattelli said Bassett and Taliaferro both confessed to being present during the break-in. Both men were held Friday on $500,000 bond.

Short was previously held on $100,000 bond, while Anderson’s bond was set at $1 million.

Another Nigger riot in Peoria, Whats new?

November 7, 2008

Here is another story in the paper of another large mob of people rioting. Its obviously niggers, you don’t see white people getting into huge mobs in black areas of town. The media has gone on attack mode against us, yet time and time again we are correct. Still no action has been taken against these beasts. Sigh, when will people pull their heads out of their asses? As far as I’m concerned, the police should have beat them all unconscious and locked them all up. But what lesson would have really been learned? They are a breed halfway between human and animals after all.

PEORIA —

A police officer came upon a man stabbed in the chest Tuesday night in the East Bluff.

The officer on patrol about 9:05 p.m. spotted a man with a bloody shirt walking along the sidewalk in the 1100 block of Frye Avenue. When he approached the victim, the officer realized the man, in his mid-30s, was bleeding from a serious stab wound to the chest, police said.

He was rushed to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, where his condition was not available Tuesday night.

Police officers and detectives crowded around a two-story home in the 1000 block of East Frye Avenue, though officers wouldn’t confirm that was where the stabbing occurred. Initial reports were that a woman had stabbed the man, but officers also wouldn’t confirm those reports, only saying that all parties involved were in custody.
